School Bus Safety

As the school year begins, I wanted to share some important bus stop safety tips!

1. Get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is supposed to arrive – this way you’re not fighting traffic or potentially running across the street.

2. Never sit on the road or curb. Doing so makes it hard for cars to see you and hard to move quickly out of the way.

3. When the bus arrives, stand at least 6 feet away from the curb.

4. If you must cross the street to get on the bus, stay at least 10 feet in front of the bus to make sure the driver can see you.

5. Wait until the bus stops completely and the door opens before getting on.

6. Always make sure you are in sight of the bus driver.

7. Use the handrails when getting on and off the bus.

8. Never walk behind the bus.

9. If there is ever a problem of any sort, always tell the bus driver.

A note for cars and drivers! The School District of Lee County is partnering with BusPatrol for the 2025/26 school year. This is a new means to keep students safe from motorists as they board/exit their bus. BusPatrol is a “stop arm” enforcement technology, committed to making roads safer for students. Under the agreement with BusPatrol, cameras will be placed on the stop arms of all 900 district buses. The cameras will be able to capture the license plate of any vehicle that illegally passes a stopped bus and provide the video to law enforcement for review. Drivers who illegally pass a bus will be fined $250.
