WHISKEY CREEK AND SUMMERLIN ROAD IN THE 1980S
• Summerlin Road: Summerlin Road was a two-lane dirt road during the period when the Whiskey Creek community was being developed. It was constructed in the early 1980s as a relief route for U.S. 41 and a secondary evacuation corridor for residents of Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach.
• Whiskey Creek Development: The Whiskey Creek neighborhood, developed by U.S. Homes, began construction at this time. The proximity of lots to the future improved Summerlin Road was initially a concern for buyers, leading the developer to construct a buffer wall along the property lines.
• Access: Originally, the only entry to the Whiskey Creek subdivision was from McGregor Boulevard.
• McGregor Boulevard: Around the same time Summerlin Road was built, McGregor Boulevard (CR 867) was widened and realigned in certain sections, with work completed by 1983.
The area underwent significant infrastructure changes during the 1980s as Fort Myers expanded.
